Every Mother's Nightmare Biography

::Every Mother's Nightmare::

Every Mother's Nightmare (EMN) is gearing up for a big year. The time is right for their hard rock style that solders rich guitar and moody lyrics, producing a final product that demands relentless attention. Ready for real pure rock again? This is rock that hasn't been infiltrated with other genres' characteristics but has remained a sanctuary of sorts. Rock that brings back the feeling that we should probably just drink another beer, kick back and stay awhile. Rock that is progressive and whole with a sultry edge all its own.

EMN's new CD Deeper Shade of Grey was released on February 9, 2002 at a party at Newby's in Memphis, Tennessee. In promotion of their third CD on Perris Records, negotiations are in the works for EMN to tour nationwide this spring and summer.

Forming in the early 90s, EMN is no stranger to the music scene. They quickly became the most prominent leaders of the Memphis rock scene, packing smoky venues on historic Beale Street and throughout the city as the word spread about their blistery, energy-packed performances. Before long, EMN's local reputation made its way to recording labels and Arista Records signed the band to an impressive record deal. The band repaid their fans’ devotion by recording the videos right in the Memphis club where it happened for them. The first single, "Walls Come Down," went to 16 on Billboard album tracks and the video was played on Mtv's Headbanger's Ball for six weeks. The second single "Love Can Make You Blind" went to 3 on the Billboard album tracks and stayed at 11 for sixteen weeks. It was a big favorite on Mtv as well, going to number 1 on All Request and Headbanger's Ball for seven weeks. Their self-titled album went on to sell about 500,000 copies. EMN's second album, Wake Up Screaming, sold more than 200,000 copies and the single "House of Pain" was featured on Headbanger's Ball for four weeks.

EMN received a lot of press and toured for five years for these two albums, opening up for bands like Cheap Trick and Dream Theater, and performing many headliner shows, one such show being the Livestock Festival which drew a crowd of 55,000. One time, the band sold 9,000 tickets in a single night after being added late to a bill at a Florida racetrack. They were featured in hundreds of hard rock magazines in the U.S. and overseas and were guests on many television shows from Joan Rivers’ talk show to the Playboy video channel.

When the winds of music changed for the sound of grunge rock, EMN was lost in the recording industries' hunt for the next hottest band with the Seattle sound. The band, though suffering an industry setback, knew to keep going as artists. Rick Ruhl, singer for EMN, believes that when you are in a band you stick it out for good or bad and keep writing the whole way. They brushed aside the stereotype of being a "hair band" and continued down their hard rock musical path, exploring and experimenting with their individual sound, avoiding trends to progress by their own terms.

Perris Records proved to be the perfect avenue for the band to take their music to new limits. Back Traxx, a CD recorded a several years ago that is hard rock done southern style, and Smokin' Delta Voodoo, a CD that takes on new band members' influences and direction, were both released in 2000. Deeper Shade of Grey (2002) shows how the band has grown individually as artists and tightly as a band. And the latest, Live Songs From Somewhere (2003) is an energy filled live show packed with the hits and a few of our favorites. Reaching for help and guidance, reflecting on loneliness and instability, or seeking warm nurture and escape, the songs study what we need and

then face the fear of not being able to achieve it. With combined record sales of about 800,000 copies the band is proud of what they've done and plans to continue doing what they love.

Between the recording process, they took their music to the clubs and were greeted by eager, rock-hungry fans wherever they went. Through their web page, they receive emails from all over the world from EMN fans, who remember the early days and who love the brand new material, asking them to come to their town to perform. When at their home base of Memphis, EMN plays at the Hard Rock Café, Omni New Daisy, and Newby's and periodically do benefits concerts for organizations like The Make a Wish Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Writing, recording and touring…it’s a way of life for EMN. They follow their artistic drive, creating the sound that emerges from their souls, even if this sound over the years sometimes didn’t match what was hip at the moment. The foundation of rock and roll is rebellion after all…EMN perhaps are rebels in the very core sense because they believed in hard rock through times when hard rock just wasn't the thing to do. This loyalty has paid off, however, as the band's new album has entered the music world at the right time, where hard rock acts are embraced once against by the mainstream. The music environment and EMN both transformed through the years on what at times may have appeared to be parallel paths, but this recent crossing on level ground proves otherwise. Yes, the time is right for EMN.
